What is a solitaire engagement ring?

The setting exists to hold it and then get out of the way — most often six claws, sometimes four, a bezel, or a halo if you want the centre to read larger. It is the oldest idea in engagement rings and the one that has never dated. Every ring we make is built around a single centre stone, then finished to suit the hand it is going on.

Lab-grown or natural diamond — which should I choose?

They are the same material. A lab-grown diamond has the same carbon structure, hardness and fire as a mined one; the difference is where it formed and what it costs. For the same budget, lab-grown usually buys noticeably more carat and a higher clarity grade. Natural diamonds hold their appeal for people who want the geology and the resale story. We set both, certified either way, and we will quote you the same ring in each so you can see the difference rather than take our word for it.

How does moissanite compare to a diamond?

Moissanite is a different stone, not an imitation diamond. It is very hard, wears well daily, and throws noticeably more coloured fire than a diamond does — some people love exactly that, others find it reads differently in sunlight. It costs a fraction of a diamond at the same size, so it is the honest answer when the size matters more than the material. Moissanite is not graded by GIA or IGI the way diamonds are; we will tell you what you are getting and why we chose it.

Is 18k gold or platinum better for an engagement ring?

Accepted Answer

Platinum is denser and holds claws tightly over decades, and it keeps its colour without plating — it is the quieter, heavier choice, and it costs more. 18k gold is lighter and warmer, and white gold is rhodium-plated to reach that bright white, which means an occasional re-plate over the years. Both are hard-wearing when the setting is made properly. We cast in recycled 18k yellow, rose and white gold, and in 950 platinum, all hallmarked.

Are your diamonds certified?

Yes. Natural and lab-grown diamonds come with a GIA or IGI certificate, and the report number is yours — you can look it up independently before the ring is made. The metal carries a BIS hallmark for its purity. An insurance valuation is included with every commission, which is the document your insurer will actually ask for. If a certificate matters to you for a particular stone, tell us and we will source to it.

Will I pay import duty in the UK, US or Canada?

Accepted Answer

No. Duties and taxes are handled before the ring reaches you, so the price we quote is the price you pay — there is no customs bill at the door, which is the part people are usually caught out by when buying jewellery from abroad. Everything ships fully insured with tracking, and we send photographs of the finished ring before it leaves the bench. If anything is held in customs, that is ours to resolve, not yours.

How do I know her ring size if I want it to be a surprise?

Most people do not know it, and that is fine. Borrow a ring she already wears on that hand and we can work from its inside diameter, or tell us her height and build and we will start from the size that fits most hands and adjust. Sizing systems differ — the US and Canada use numbers, the UK, Ireland, Australia and South Africa use letters — so tell us which you are quoting and we will convert. Resizing in the first year is free, which is the real safety net.

Can I design my own ring?

That is how most of our commissions start. Use the 3D configurator on this page to set the shape, the metal, the setting and the band, and send it over — or send a photograph of something you have seen and we will draw from that. You will get renders to approve before any metal is poured, and nothing is cast until you are happy with them. The ring you approve is the ring that gets made.

How much does a solitaire engagement ring cost?

Our rings start at $1,200 for the Classic Six and rise with the centre stone — that is where nearly all of the cost sits, not in the setting. Carat, colour, clarity and whether the stone is natural, lab-grown or moissanite will move the number far more than the metal will. Tell us your budget and we will show you the best stone it buys rather than quietly making the ring smaller. There is no charge for the design work.

Question 10

What happens if something goes wrong with the ring?

Accepted Answer

Resizing is free for the first year, and re-polishing is free for life — bring it back whenever it has stopped looking new. Claws are checked and re-tensioned as part of that. If a setting ever fails through how we made it, we fix it; that is not a warranty period, it is just the job. Tell us what happened and we will sort it out.
