14k gold solitaire rings

Fourteen carat gold is 58.5 per cent gold and 41.5 per cent alloy, stamped 585. It is the standard engagement ring gold in the United States and much of Europe, and it is available here on request. We recommend 18k, and this page says why without pretending 14k is a mistake: it is harder, it is lighter, it costs less, and for some hands and some budgets it is the right call.

What 14k gives you, and what it gives up

What you gain. Hardness: the extra alloy makes 14k noticeably more scratch-resistant than 18k, which matters on a hand that is used hard every day. Weight: it is a little lighter. Cost: less gold in the ring means a lower metal cost, and if the stone is where the budget should go, that can be the difference between the size you want and the size under it.

What you give up. Colour: 14k yellow is visibly paler and less saturated than 18k, and 14k rose is pinker and harder. Skin: the higher alloy content, which in white 14k often includes nickel, is what more people react to; if your skin is sensitive, 18k or platinum is the safer choice and we will say so. Prestige, for what it is worth: 18k is what fine jewellery has meant for a century, and a hallmark that says 750 rather than 585 is part of what you are buying.

14k yellow
Paler and cooler than 18k yellow, closer to a straw gold. Hard-wearing. The classic American engagement ring metal.
14k white
Rhodium-plated like 18k white and needs the same re-plating over the years. Often alloyed with nickel; ask for a palladium-white alloy if your skin reacts.
14k rose
The pinkest and the hardest of all the golds, because the copper content is highest. Flatters a warm stone and never needs plating.

When we would choose 14k ourselves

A hand that is genuinely hard on rings: nurses, climbers, people who work with their hands and will not take the ring off. A budget where every rupee or dollar saved on metal goes into the stone, and the stone matters more to you than the hallmark. A buyer in the United States or Germany who has always worn 14k and finds 18k soft. Those are real reasons and we make 14k rings for them.

What does not change. The claws are cut to the stone and the metal, so a 14k ring holds its stone as securely as an 18k one. The hallmark is BIS, 585. Re-polishing is free for life. The design, the renders, the certificate and the insured delivery are identical.

How a ring is made here

The process is the same for every ring. We talk, by video or in person in Bengaluru. We source the stone for you and send its certificate. A designer draws the ring and you approve the renders before any metal is poured. The makers we work with cut and set it in 18k gold or 950 platinum. You see photographs of the finished ring before it ships, insured and tracked, with an insurance valuation in the box.

Every stone comes with its certificate: GIA for lab-grown diamonds, IGI for natural diamonds and GRA for moissanite. The report number is yours to look up on the lab's own site before the ring is made.

Questions people ask

Is 14k gold good enough for an engagement ring?

Yes. It is the standard engagement ring gold in the United States and it is harder than 18k. We recommend 18k for its colour and because fewer people react to it, but 14k is a sound choice, not a compromise, and we make it on request.

14k or 18k: which is harder?

14k, because it has more alloy. It scratches less in daily wear. 18k is softer but richer in colour and kinder to sensitive skin. Platinum sits apart from both: softer than 14k but it displaces rather than wears away.

Will 14k gold irritate my skin?

It can, more often than 18k, because of the higher alloy content, and 14k white gold often contains nickel. If your skin reacts to jewellery, choose 18k or platinum, or ask us for a nickel-free 14k white alloy.

Does 14k gold look different from 18k?

Side by side, yes: 14k yellow is paler and 14k rose is pinker. On its own hand, most people cannot tell. If the deep yellow of fine gold is part of what you want, choose 18k.

Is 14k gold hallmarked in India?

Yes. BIS hallmarks 14k as 585, alongside 18k as 750 and 22k as 916. Every 14k ring we make carries it inside the band.

Start with the metal

Tell us the stone and the shape and whether 14k is a preference or a budget decision, and we will draw the ring and quote it in 14k and 18k side by side so the difference is a number rather than a guess.
