Moissanite solitaire rings

Moissanite is silicon carbide, not carbon. It is not a diamond and we will never sell it as one. It is also a legitimate stone in its own right: 9.25 on the Mohs scale, harder than sapphire, hard enough to wear every day for a lifetime, and with noticeably more fire than a diamond. For the person who wants the largest, liveliest stone the budget allows and is not attached to it being a diamond, it is the right choice, not a compromise.

What moissanite is, and how it differs

First found in a meteorite crater and now grown in a lab, moissanite disperses light into colour roughly two and a half times as strongly as diamond. That is the rainbow flash people notice. Some want exactly that; others find that in bright sun it reads as obviously not a diamond. It is the one stone on this site you should see in person, or at least on video in daylight, before deciding.

Modern moissanite is colourless. Older material had a faint green or yellow cast; the stones we source are graded D to F equivalent and we show you the actual stone rather than a stock image.

Hardness
9.25 on Mohs, below diamond at 10 and above sapphire at 9. It does not scratch in daily wear and does not cloud.
Fire
Much stronger than diamond. Larger stones and round brilliants show it most; an emerald cut or a bezel setting calms it.
Certified by GRA
Every moissanite we set comes with its GRA report, which grades colour, clarity and cut and which you can verify on GRA's site.

Why the setting matters more with moissanite

Because the stone costs so much less than a diamond of the same size, moissanite is usually sold in silver or thin 14k to keep the price low. That is where moissanite rings get their reputation for falling apart. The stone is fine; the metal is not. Silver bends, wears thin and loosens its claws over the years. For a ring worn every day we set moissanite the way we set a diamond, in 18k gold or 950 platinum, with claws cut to hold it for decades. We do make moissanite in 925 silver and 14k gold on request, as a placeholder or a first ring, and the silver page says exactly what that trade is.

A large moissanite in a six-claw setting reads as a large stone with a great deal of life. If you want it to read more quietly, a bezel, which rings the stone in metal, is the usual answer and suits moissanite well.

Colours: colourless, and the coloured moissanites

Moissanite is graded on the diamond scale for colour. The stones we source are D to F equivalent, colourless, with none of the green or yellow cast older material had. Near colourless G to H is also made and costs a little less; on a hand it reads white.

Because it is grown, moissanite also comes in colours that have no natural diamond equivalent at any price. Grey, from pale smoke to charcoal, is the most popular and reads quietly modern. Green and teal are vivid and unmistakable. Blue, yellow, champagne and black are also grown. All are GRA certified like the colourless stones, and all have the same hardness and the same fire.

Colourless D to F
The standard. Reads as a white stone with more fire than a diamond. Best in platinum or white gold if you want it to read coolest.
Grey and charcoal
The most chosen colour. Pairs with every metal and reads as a considered, modern solitaire rather than a diamond substitute.
Green, teal and blue
Vivid and saturated. Usually chosen for a ring that is meant to be noticed, and often set in yellow gold for contrast.

Carat: sizes, and why moissanite is sold by millimetre

Moissanite is lighter than diamond, so a stone the size of a one carat diamond weighs about 0.88 carats. The trade therefore sells it by face-up size, quoted as diamond equivalent weight: a 6.5 millimetre moissanite is called a 1 carat DEW. The table below is in millimetres for exactly that reason, and the sizes are what the stone looks like, not what it weighs.

Because the stone costs so little per carat, moissanite solitaires are often two, three or four carats DEW. That is a large stone and a lot of fire. Oval and cushion carry the size most gracefully; a bezel setting calms the sparkle if you want the size without the flash.

How a ring is made here

The process is the same for every ring. We talk, by video or in person in Bengaluru. We source the stone for you and send its certificate. A designer draws the ring and you approve the renders before any metal is poured. The makers we work with cut and set it in 18k gold or 950 platinum. You see photographs of the finished ring before it ships, insured and tracked, with an insurance valuation in the box.

Every stone comes with its certificate: GIA for lab-grown diamonds, IGI for natural diamonds and GRA for moissanite. The report number is yours to look up on the lab's own site before the ring is made.

Questions people ask

Can people tell moissanite from diamond?

In most light, no. In bright direct sun, the extra fire can give it away to somebody who knows what to look for. A jeweller with a tester can tell at once. If it matters that nobody can tell, choose a lab-grown diamond instead.

Does moissanite get cloudy or scratch?

No. At 9.25 on the Mohs scale it is harder than every gemstone except diamond and it does not cloud. Skin oil dulls it like any stone and a warm soapy rinse brings it back.

Why not set it in silver to keep the cost down?

You can, and we make 925 silver moissanite rings on request, usually as a placeholder for the proposal or a first ring. Silver bends, wears thin and loosens its claws over years of daily wear, so for the ring that is meant to last we recommend 18k gold or 950 platinum, and the same stone can be reset into either later.

What certificate comes with it?

A GRA report grading colour, clarity, cut and carat equivalent, with a number you can look up on GRA's own site. We send it before the ring is made.

Does moissanite come in colours?

Yes. Colourless D to F is the standard, and grey, green, teal, blue, yellow, champagne and black are also grown, all GRA certified with the same hardness and fire. Grey is the most chosen.

What does 2 carat DEW mean?

Diamond equivalent weight: the stone is the size of a 2 carat diamond, about 8.2 millimetres round, although it weighs slightly less because moissanite is lighter. Moissanite is sold by size for this reason.

Which shape suits moissanite best?

Oval and cushion are the most popular, because they read large and the elongation softens the fire. Round shows the most sparkle. Emerald cut shows the least, which some people prefer. We will show you the same size in two shapes on video if it helps.

See it before you decide

Tell us the size and shape you are thinking of and we will send video of real GRA-certified moissanite in daylight, with a quote. If you then decide you want a diamond after all, that is fine too.
