Lozenge cut solitaire rings

A lozenge is a diamond-shaped diamond: a rhombus with four points, stretched long, and usually cut in steps like an emerald cut so that it flashes in sheets rather than sparkling. It is the most architectural solitaire shape there is, closer to a piece of design than a piece of jewellery, and almost always cut to order because nobody keeps them in stock. We cut it to order, in natural or lab-grown diamond.

What a lozenge cut is, and what it asks

Four straight sides, four points, a long axis and a short one, with a ratio usually between 1.8 and 2.2. The step cutting gives it the hall-of-mirrors flash of an emerald cut and the same honesty: there is nowhere for an inclusion to hide, so clarity has to be VS1 or better, and colour shows at the points, so G or above in white metal. A brilliant-cut lozenge exists and sparkles instead, but the step cut is the one people mean.

Four points is four places to protect. The usual answers are a bezel, which runs metal around the whole outline and suits the geometry perfectly; four V-claws, one per point; or two V-claws on the long axis with a pair of plain claws on the sides. Set east-west, across the finger, a lozenge sits low and reads like a bar of light. Set north-south it is the longest-looking shape on this site.

Lozenge or kite
A kite has two long sides and two short, like the toy, with the widest point off-centre. A lozenge is symmetrical, widest at the middle. Both are cut to order; the lozenge is the one that reads balanced as a solitaire.
Clarity
VS1 or better, VVS if lab-grown, because the step facets show everything. We will not set a lozenge below VS1.
Setting
Bezel for the cleanest line and the most protection. Four V-claws if you want the stone to float. A plain narrow band; the stone carries its own geometry.

How carat reads in a lozenge

Length is what the eye registers, and a lozenge is almost all length. A one carat lozenge at 2.0 ratio runs around 10 by 5 millimetres and looks far larger than a one carat round. Two carats runs around 12.5 by 6.5. Because step cuts carry weight in their depth and because clarity has to be high, lab-grown is where most lozenges are bought: a VVS two carat lozenge is a reasonable commission grown and an unreasonable one mined.

The shape is nearly always made as a single stone on a plain band, or as a toi et moi beside a round or a pear. A halo fights the geometry and we would talk you out of one.

How a ring is made here

The process is the same for every ring. We talk, by video or in person in Bengaluru. We source the stone for you and send its certificate. A designer draws the ring and you approve the renders before any metal is poured. The makers we work with cut and set it in 18k gold or 950 platinum. You see photographs of the finished ring before it ships, insured and tracked, with an insurance valuation in the box.

Every stone comes with its certificate: GIA for lab-grown diamonds, IGI for natural diamonds and GRA for moissanite. The report number is yours to look up on the lab's own site before the ring is made.

Questions people ask

What is a lozenge cut diamond?

A symmetrical diamond-shaped stone, a rhombus with four points, usually elongated to a ratio around 2 and cut in steps like an emerald cut. It flashes in sheets rather than sparkling and reads very long on the hand.

Lozenge or kite: which should I choose?

A lozenge is symmetrical and reads balanced on its own, which suits a solitaire. A kite is asymmetrical, widest nearer one end, and reads more playful, often as a side stone. Both are cut to order.

Are the four points fragile?

Each one is a place to protect, and we do: a bezel around the whole stone, or a V-claw on every point. Set that way a lozenge is worn daily without worry. Set with plain claws on the points, which we do not do, it would chip.

What clarity does a lozenge need?

VS1 or better. The step facets hide nothing, so an inclusion that would vanish in a round sits in plain view. With lab-grown, VVS is affordable and is what we usually source.

East-west or north-south?

East-west, across the finger, is how most lozenges are worn: low, long and modern. North-south is the longest-looking shape there is and lengthens the finger dramatically. We draw both for you to see.

Start with the lozenge

Tell us the length and ratio you have in mind, natural or lab-grown, and whether it sits east-west or north-south, and we will have stones cut or sourced and show them on video with certificates and a quote. Renders show every point protected before anything is made.
