Platinum solitaire rings
Ninety-five per cent pure, naturally white, and the densest of the metals we use: a platinum ring is noticeably heavier in the hand. It needs no plating because it is already the colour it will always be, and claws cut in platinum hold a stone more securely than gold claws of the same size, because the metal moves rather than snapping. For a solitaire that will be worn every day for fifty years, it is the metal to beat.

Why platinum for a solitaire
Security first. A solitaire is one stone held by a few claws, and the claws are the whole safety of the ring. Platinum claws can be cut finer than gold ones and still hold, which shows more stone, and when platinum is knocked it displaces rather than wears away, so the claw stays. It is why platinum is the trade's choice for fine claws on a valuable stone.
Colour second. 18k white gold is yellow gold alloyed pale and then rhodium-plated to look white, and the plating wears in a few years. Platinum is white through and through. A platinum solitaire looks the same in year twenty as in year one, apart from the patina.
- The patina
- Platinum scratches into a soft grey satin rather than staying mirror-bright. Most people come to prefer it. If you want permanent mirror polish, it re-polishes, free for life here, but expect the patina to return.
- Weight
- About a third heavier than the same ring in 18k gold. Some people love the feel; some prefer gold for exactly this reason. Try both if you can.
- Skin
- Hypoallergenic. 950 platinum is alloyed with ruthenium or cobalt, not nickel, so it is the choice for anyone who reacts to white gold.
Platinum or 18k white gold
They look the same on the day the ring is delivered. White gold is brighter, because the rhodium plate is a mirror, and it is lighter and costs less. Platinum is heavier, more secure, and never needs re-plating. Over a decade, the platinum ring has cost less to own and has not spent any time at a jeweller's being re-plated. If the budget is tight and the stone matters more, white gold is a reasonable place to save. If the ring is for life, platinum.
Every platinum ring we make is 950, stamped inside the band. 18k gold carries the BIS hallmark. Both are yours to check.
How a ring is made here
The process is the same for every ring. We talk, by video or in person in Bengaluru. We source the stone for you and send its certificate. A designer draws the ring and you approve the renders before any metal is poured. The makers we work with cut and set it in 18k gold or 950 platinum. You see photographs of the finished ring before it ships, insured and tracked, with an insurance valuation in the box.
Every stone comes with its certificate: GIA for lab-grown diamonds, IGI for natural diamonds and GRA for moissanite. The report number is yours to look up on the lab's own site before the ring is made.
Questions people ask
Does platinum scratch?
It marks, into a soft grey patina, but it does not wear away the way gold does: the metal moves rather than being lost. Most people grow to prefer the patina. Re-polishing is free for life and brings back the mirror finish whenever you want it.
Is platinum better than white gold for a solitaire?
For security and for never needing re-plating, yes. White gold is brighter on day one, lighter and cheaper. Both are the metals we recommend for a ring worn daily. 14k gold and 925 silver are available on request, with their trade-offs set out on their own pages.
Is platinum hypoallergenic?
Yes. 950 platinum contains no nickel, which is the usual cause of reactions to white gold. It is the metal to choose if your skin is sensitive.
Why is a platinum ring heavier?
Platinum is denser than gold, so the same ring weighs about a third more. Some people like the substance; others prefer the lightness of gold. Neither is wrong.
Can a platinum ring be resized?
Yes, by a jeweller who works in platinum, which not every high-street jeweller does. We can resize rings we have made. Resizing is a service rather than free, and we quote it when you ask.
Start with the metal
Tell us the stone and the shape and we will draw the ring in 950 platinum, with the claws sized to the stone, and send renders before anything is made. The quote covers the stone, the metal and the making, with nothing added later.
